What better time of year for these books then when all your favourite fresh fruits are in season! Time to sit back and enjoy these books in the sun with a fresh lemonade. This blog post is part of a collab with our friend Claire from Bite-Sized Kitchen! Check out our other post over on her blog here.

If you would like to read the two amazing features she has written for us, you can find them here, and here!

Cover of Blueberries for Sal written by Robert McCloskey.

Name of Book: Blueberries For Sal

Year Published: 1948

Words and Pictures by: Robert McCloskey

What is the main topic of the book?: This classic book by Robert McCloskey follows a mama and child and a mama bear and cub as they pick blueberries on the same hillside, preparing for the long winter ahead. The inside jacket features a beautiful illustration of mama and child in the kitchen working together to preserve blueberries for the winter ahead.

Strengths: Originally drawn in 1948, the line drawings are expressive and beautiful. The sound effects are perfect as the pairs pick berries - ‘Kuplink, kuplank, kuplunk!’ and the repetition will appeal to your child. Have you gone berry picking with your child? Do you find they eat more than they pick as well? Do you even try to fight it?

Rating: 10/10!
